Although I am new to this site I have tried to make the effort to join in by posting some photos.
I live looking out over Margate Roads in North Kent,UK.We often have a number of ships anchored awaiting pilots. The ships lie off some 3or 4 kms.
I would love my photos to be highly colourful withb deep blue seas and equaly blue skys but in reality it's December and in the UK it's generaly grey.
Some of my 'flat'posts however are ships for which you did not have images.
,so they may be of some use.If however you rate these posts as unusable,I know from posts I have read that your members are quite discerning,I will refrain from posting until yhe light improves
@rob1053 Hi and welcome to DS. I live up the coast from you near Blyth and I bet we get more Grey skys than you. I also go to Hong kong 2 or 3 times a year and they get Brown polution over there. May I suggest that you read MindOpen's Post in Images, the posting before yours. Regards, Ian
@rob1053: welcome and thanks for joining.
Do not bother to much about the gray sky, most of Europe is like this now. There will be better times to come and we are awaiting your shots anyway...
But taking shots from objects 3-4km away usually requieres zoom lenses which are expensive and the images will not have any depth focus.
So best would be to just wait until they come into the port and take a shot from a nearer position. Fleetmon could be of good help to find the right moment to jump into the car :-)
Since i started this topic I have not been posting as I did not want to upoload inferior shots.I have now invested in a 70-300 IS zoom lens and am concentrating on vessels closer to shore. Margate roads is a good place for vessels as they moor here awaiting estuary pilots. I am also including shots from Ramsgate Harbour. Some vessels for which I have uploaded shots have been Imageless so at least I have helped there.
Hey Rob, just keep going and many thanks for that.
Your long shots like:

are very welcome and nice done. Get a tripod (single leg is also sufficient:-) and use the high resolution of your camera. You could improve the viewport later on in your image editor, if a zoom of 300 is not enough to fill the image.
What editor are you using?

Thanks for reply.Currently using Paint Shiop Pro Photo X2.Its more affordable than Photoshop, easier to use and (I'm told)better than elements. Will take your advice on the tripod, Hopefully once the weather improves and the image quality will have more impact
