My question is the following: Why my last four pictures have been deleted and I had no answer as to why? Must be why they have a big watermark? They have that watermark because I'm tired of other people make money with my photos and I did not earn a penny. I'm sick of seeing my photos in magazines, websites or even put the author. The Watermark does not stop to see the boat but prevents inappropriate use is made.
I am saddened because this site has not given me any explanation of why they have deleted me these photos. I think that I upload photos here do not generate money for others, because it would be one thing that upset me ... I think not.
I expect a response from administrators. Regards
mtarrago,
I deleted your images due to watermark over the vessels. It's not allowed, you can have a watermark in a corner but not in the middle of the picture.
If you have a problem that people use your pictures, please stop uploading. It happens to everywhere. I have this problem, miraflores has the same problem, ...
Check the emailaddress you used to register on this website, because you should receive an email with remarks why photo got deleted. For every deleted photo, you should receive an email. See in you spambox. If you have no email, please contact MindOpen, maybe there is a problem then.
@mtarrago: Dear Miguel, we've set some standards for images on digital-seas which do not allow large watermarks or logos interference with the vessel image.
Thats the reason your watermarked images got deleted. I have to check on the email procedure, since you've got no signal about it.
We do also see the problems with people or organizations simply using material for their publications or websites without a clearance with the photographer. Almost all of our ideas on this platform got copied sooner or later on other sites (we try to relax on that:-) and we like to adopt good ideas too (thats the web). But stealing images and using them without credits and payments, is something different.
Our efforts to keep EXIF tags and clearly name the issues are just the start to deal with copyrights. Let's fight them, if we can name them.
We will always react and start action, when cases are getting to our attention.
To find a compromise between showing attractive images and to not make using the image (for print) to easy, is a difficult task. And it will not solve the problem anyway. We have to trust the rights in this world and will make other people more sensible for this topic.
If we get asked about using images found on DS, we always will connect the interested party with the photographer. We will not communicate with third parties about the usage. All images uploaded will only be used at the DS website and the Fleetmon client (web+mobile).
It should be fairly easy to track DS watermarked images on the web. We collect contact info from all known spotter websites at the web to get in touch with them fast if neccessary. We would like to support a knowledgeable community, which helps each other to take care. Hope you keep beeing a good part of this.
@ Stevo. You said: "If You Have a Problem That people use your pictures, please stop uploading. What kind of solution you give me! :(... I think Was this site created to share pictures of ships and not to take advantage others.
@ Mindopen. I agree with some of your comments. It is admittedly difficult to maintain the balance between attractive photos and misuse ... But I think the main thing is to keep your intellectual property right against a moderate loss of attractiveness. It is also true that with any image editor is very easy to remove the watermark from "Digital - Seas" and Waterman own. I suggest you get this watermark smaller and thus maintain security in my photos. I hope you understand I'm tired of seeing photos of me in many places without my permission. We can prove this and maintain a balance between the attractiveness and security. Greetings.
mtarrago,
You're correct, but this is reality. The only way to keep your pictures for yourself, isn't uploading them anymore. From moment you put a picture on the internet, somebody is using it.
@ Stevo. You're absolutely right. If you upload a photo to the internet, then you are exposed to use the photo improperly. But the solution is not what you say you: do not upload photos, is to protect a minimum of security. As we say in the computer language "read only", so we can all enjoy the pictures and preserve the copyright. This watermark (as I said earlier, smaller) we can see and enjoy the photo and prevent it from being published by others without our permission. That is my simple philosophy. I do not want to bother anyone with this, but I think the dismissal of what happened to me is the best I can do. Greetings.
After giving in to the smaller watermark, the administration of this site again have deleted the photos I upload. I write these words, thinking that it is worth upload photos here, because administrators are very intransigent and not give me a specific reason because I can not protect my photos against fraudulent use. Watermark latter, shows perfectly the ship while my picture is protected. I hope we're not playing as children, that I upload a photo and the administrator delete them.
Administrators: If you feel the need to cancel my account because of this, because for me, go ahead. Grettings
Why should an administrator cancel your account?? If you don't agree with the rules of DS, you should decide to stop uploading. I think your old enough for that. We're not childish but correct. The rules are no watermark in middle of your images, on the vessel. Just follow the rules. If you don't agree, stop uploading your photo's here.
Maybe you can start reading the other posts in the topic and start reading your emails. For every deletion you receive an email with a comment.
mtarrago,
I hope you understand that this is sad for DS if you decide to leave and I also want you to stay here. But we ahve some rules to follow.
You'll be right, Steve, but I still see the page and I see no rule that prevents upload photos with such watermark ... If neither you and me we aren't children, but I'm back to upload the photos because administrators do not you gave me a specific explanation of why not do this (I see the correct mail, span, etc) ...It is very sad that you have to get a boat to get up early on a day off, Sunday, in the rain, very cold and miles on the car and someone come and take your picture and make money with it. This website prevents me how to protect them and I have to think that if this site has some benefit from them ... I think this thought the user can have any of this page.
I think my own philosophy in life has no place in this page, therefore, are not my photos. Painfully I decided not to upload more photos and delete the rest that I have. I repeat: It is painful, but it is so ... Goodbye D.S.
@mtarrago: what a pitty. I understand the arguments very well, even though I wish for more relaxation in this kind of discussion. It should not end up with people stopping their support, because we are not reacting fast enough.
Why can't get some things some time to think about. in forums, emotional reactions aren't good advisors.
To upload with smaller resolution would be one effective step for making thiefs life harder. To fight them by pointing to em and getting them in trouble would be another one. Only printed work makes any money in this times, and we are constantly getting asked by publishers about images.
If our work will be copied on the web, it is hard to cope. I try to be proud, when people like my work and in small amounts they can make use of it. If they start beeing offending with their use, I still can decide, whats the next step...
This gives me the opportunity not to talk about money all the time, but also keeping my rights of my pictures.
To say it shortly, I really would miss your great shots on this site, being an example of high level work and a big motivation to keep going for me.
We want to attract especially good photographers here by setting high standards. I still have to think about ways of securing images, watermarking, sizes etc, willing to discuss without pressure and hurry.
I relished the Easter time and having some days off, would have otherwise answered faster. Thinking of all the work you had until now, I am sad about your reaction.
Thanks for your comments, Mindopen. I have not been able to hear my concerns and give a solution that could be worth to all users, we have a common problem. The way to prove that in this way was not a method was to erase, to delete and erase my pictures ... I do not think I deserved this ... Again, just trying to test a method of protection, as I had said, just prove that we tried several users. All I got to know is that I and my ideas have no place in DS and it is sad to know ... But it's true. Greetings.
@Mind Open.
Lars, is there any way you could restrict downloading to only loged on members.
I believe some of the photographic sites do this.
That way if images continued to appear in the press you would know it is from a member,if this were the case would your computer logs then not show you who downloaded the image?
Just a thaught
Regards
Rob
@mtarrago: Over the easter holidays I indeed checked only once the forum to write replies. From my point of view, it needs only a bit of time to discuss and find a good way to handle things. And the trust that we are interested too in listening to the users and their wishes. But fast actions and changes without a masterplan are most of the time are not worth to do, they want stay for long.
For example rob1053 suggestion to restrict the 800x600 image view for logged in users only, is possible done really quick and I could imagine to show these larger pictures only with a watermark over the image. (approved/trusted users could see it without anything).
This would give some more security to all users, not only the ones which watermark themself and also keep the clean small shots for overviews and fleetmon.
Right now there are 40.000 users registered and everybody is able to create a free account in seconds to get access to "logged in" status. So we have to think a bit more about the separation.
Let me discuss with Thomas and Martin the described option...
@mtarrago: and yes Miguel you definitely not deserve this and I am still willing to solve this topic somehow , to prevent actions like loosing efforts of much work already done
and this great way of letting other people be part of our dedications.
Miguel, none of us want to see you go you are valuble member,I have learned so much just by viewing your images. I aspire to produce photographs to your level. Please give Mind Open a chance to come up with a possible solution.
Kind Regards
Rob

Hey Javier,
Sorry but I don't understand what your saying.
Can you explain in some words??
Grt Stevo
@Mr. Stevo.
To receive relevant news, I keep silent, not misinterpret my comments
Attentively
@Mind Open
Lars,I have just uploaded 5 or 6 images, which are fairly large high def files. When I click on the thumbnail and the fullsize image appears the image is imprinted 3 times across the centre 'Image Property of Rob Knight'(an extract of my exif info) but when I click on the comments button the larger generated image is not overprinted. This new generated watermark is not of my doing, is it a trial you are making?- if it is then surely it answers Miguel's concerns!
@Mind Open
Furthur to my previous post. I downloaded one of my own images and sure enough the watermark is right across the image.Looking in my user profile I note that the watermark is not an extract from my exif but the signature that I set. So has this always appeared on the full size images?
Also if I download the large image generated when I click on the comments button the watermark(signature) does not appear. Therefore if you were to make the large image generated by the comments not downloadable but only allow the large image generated by clicking on the thumbnail downloadable then so long as the image owner has added a signature to his profile then his image is protected!
@ Mind Open. One last point 4 days ago Stevo comment to mterrango that every deletion recieves an email. I have had several deletions but have never recieved an email .My email adress is correct.
please see my descriptions of our first attempt, to give you an option for watermarking:
http://blog.digital-seas.com/?p=605
@rob1053: users always will get their images without watermarks, so they can keep working with their images uneffected.
Everybody who does not like the watermarks, can get rid of them, by turning the swith in the user profile at any time.
For myself I think the new system solves a lot of problems.Well done admin fast work.
@Mind Open.Lars I hope that you will personaly email Miguel (mterrango) and encourage to give the new system a chance and stay with the site,we don't want to lose him.I feel that it would be a good idea to email Javier (cx9aaw)as well as he has suffered considerably from theft and has hardly posted a thing since before Easter. When you consider how much work he puts in especialy on his Wiki pages (I have started to do them myself but I'm not up to Javier's standard) he is a valuble member
@rob: will do for sure. also the email msgs after deletion are turned on again (bug prevented the sending). have to sleep now for a couple hours... :-)
