Dear webmaster,

I'm owner of the sailing boat Jan Bart with mmsi-nr. 244250176. Until july this year the information about my ship was correct on your website.
I've now noticed that the name of my ship have changed in JAN D BT and there are two other vesselaccounts made with the shipsname Jan Bart and the same mmsi-nr.. There is nothing changed in my boardcomputer, so I think that can not be the problem. Please delete the two registrations with the vesselname Jan Bart and change de vesselname Jan D BT back into JAN BART. Thankyou for your cooperation.

@Ian: thanks for the "workflow" description, which really makes sense to me, even though I open GE rather seldom. To have different layers of interest on the map (like best spottingplaces) would be a nice addition also for fleetmon. But then we would need to upload kml files, or edit them in inside "Fleetmon"?

To separate the regions with kml output will be a job on the plan then for us.

Dear Rob, I could not have explained it any better :-)
In short future we will have the opportunity to add user entered data to the AIS record - precisly the : vessel hull.

I think it is necessary to explain AIS data.
The ais data system is a vhf transmission using two of marine frequencies set aside exclusively for use by ais transponders. In general class A transponders are compulsory on vessels over 300 tonnes, there are however exceptions. The MMSI number for a vessel is issued by the flag country of the vessel along with the call sign. The MMSI number of a vessel is the primary identifier as far as ais is concerned.
The IMO number of a vessel is the identifier of the hull of a vessel and is issued at keel laying of vessels over 300 tonnes and remains with the hull throughout its life and will never change. In terms of ais is a secondary identifier and may often be eronious entered or missed altogether.
The ship name may change at any time regardless of flag, call sign or MMSI number, these are all secondary identifiers.these secondary identifiers together with a number of the other secondary identifiers are used by the digital-seas automated system to generate a detail page.
Always remember that if the primary identifier is incorrectly entered then all other data will be rubbish.
Therefore to sum up
A vessel hull will always have the same IMO number.
A vessel may change its flag which will generaly cause its MMSI Nimber and call sign to change
A vessel may change its name but unless it changes flag nothing else will change.
In theory, and in practice with shore based transponders,a vessel need only have a MMSI number, call sign and name.,and may not even transmit its call sign if it is acting as a static identification point(for instance a light house)
The MMSI number is the primary identifier

The information displayed by DS is transmitted by the vessels AIS system. It only transmits what has been entered by the captain, or on his behalf. Some vessels transmit 'Garbage' others make the odd mistake and some, including most fishing vessels of all nationalities, omit IMO numbers and/or other details.

Dear moderators,

Please kindly be advised that approximately 4 or 5 day ago I have faced to the problem / error on the site. When I click on "Ports" in my profile and for example choose Hamburg port, so there are a lot of vessels (as usually), but would like to pay your kind attention that all those vessels are sailing under the German Flag.
When I click on any other port the same situation appears also there. All the vessels in each port of German State are sailing under the German Flag. Suppose that it's impossible.
Please advise your feedback and when do you expect to make any corrective actions?

Thank you indeed for your attention and prompt reply.

@MindOpen: As I knwo KML is a XML dialekt. Would it be possible to modularize the contents of the global.kml to contain subsections for all the regions. So generating the inner structures for all regions separatly and then wrapping them once for each single region and then completely in one global kml. This way it would not be neccessary to generate all the code multiple times.

@MindOpen: Yeah I know exactly what you mean ;) I only stumbled over this because one gets lazy about checking correct chars when using windows long enough... For us oldschool guis it would not be that problem - if you know you have to care about filenames, you jsut do. But for nowadays users I guess it would be mor confident to not have to care about. Technically I know about hte difficulties to get a clean encoding workflow. At least I posted the bug only for documentary reasons and don't think this is a showstopper - the most guys willl use english filenames anyway.

@MindOpen In the context of Ship spotting I find Google Earth a huge help especially when intending to visit to a new place. On opening GE showing ship locations and tracking it is easy to determine where shipping channels are and the frequency of use. I can then access where I would wish to be to get the best photographs.
Wishing to be some were is not always possible, however by carefully inspecting the chosen area in close-up I frequently find likely places to which I would have access.
By adding place marks and making a hard copy I can save many hours, when on holiday, of wandering around aimlessly, much to the annoyance of my wife.
Also by plotting the routs of boat trips and local ferries through the shipping lanes I am able to access which would give me best value both in ships per cost and ships per time.
I also believe it would be a help to us all if that within DS there were the ability to share our spotting places with each other. This can be easily done using GE and I for one would be more than willing to upload my places for the benefit of others.

Since the uploader is Flash (made multiuploads possible three years ago), strings have to go from pc to flash to php to mysql. quiet a long way to get scrambled... :-)

@rob1053: It is a real nice thing to access all covered vessels at the same in GE. Fleetmon V2 will deliver exactly that and we are almost finished... yes Rob, we did not really change the kml file yet, because it is a bit unclear what to do with it.
to create the kml with the 3d structures inside (vessel 3d objects) is quiet an expensive operation for the server (in terms of calculation time). It has to be done every three minutes to be fresh. So simply to extend that procedure for ten times (regions) made me think sensible.
With now around 12.000 permanent included objects, I guess one solution would be, to reduce the actual detail information inside the GE file, get rid of the 3d stuff and try again - planned for next week....

@CX9AAW: to encourage members to be active and exchange info with each other is a good thing. We have a good ratio in our community between active and passive users. Usually around 10 out of 1000 are willing to contribute and a bit less does actually write and post comments etc.

I rather enjoy few members, giving quality input, then crowded groups with lots of noise (facebook is good for that :-)
So, me always will be patient and have a good time with all those great images from people, taking shipspotting a bit more serious. And Javier is one of em :-)

Hello to all members of Digital Seas
Well, my comments are that should encourage members to go beyond photographs of ships it is easy to see that, it is up and that's it, really is not complicated, it also costs nothing doing a vote of these magnificent vessels that some went up, I do not ask for my vote if not for some who are more alone than a fish on the high seas, this is not a criticism to anyone or anything, is just one way that people will be happy for a few shots that really are beautiful, and why not? Why can vote and it's even easier to upload the shots.
A if I encourage you to vote and also to express in image comments, if you like making or anything that you would like to write, I make this comment because I see people is becoming very passive in some ways, up and and this and now that they managed and or comments, which costs a lot to write, because I do not think that we must also express, which is free and does not cost a penny, and so we know it.
A greeting and now I'll have to translate it is.

Xavier

@VisualDelights.
I have noticed this as well but it does not bother me as it does not affect the way the info section works but if it bothers you here is a simple fix.
After viewing the detail of a vessel click on any area where there is no vessel and the image and the detail of the viewed vessel will disappear, then select the vessel you wish to view in detail-if there is no image then the picture counter from the previous viewed vessel will not be there.

In Fleetmon: When you click on a vessel which has pictures you'll see the pictures and the n/x counter on the right hand. When you then click on a vessel which has no pictures, the counter stays on top of the empty picturebox. This behaviour can be reproduced.

When I upload an image with utf8 chars in the name, those files are dispplayed with criplled names on the site - for example the filename scharhörn.jpg becomes scharh¶?rn.jpg This seems to be an encoding problem. The meta info on your site states out utf8 encoding - but I guess the database or the software which renders the site uses the wrong encoding. At least the description is processed correctly.
